INTEREST GROUP DESCRIPTIONS 2022-2023
2022/2023 CFUW Interest Groups Description Summary
- Book Club 1 (Eclectic)– Leader: Cindy Scratch
Meetings occur via Zoom on the fourth Thursday of each month @ 7 p.m. to discuss our chosen book. *No meetings in July & August.
The topics range from fiction to non-fiction, mysteries, classics, drama, humour, prize winners, biographies, autobiographies etc. written by international, national and BIPOC authors. We enjoy excellent discussions about these books.
Every June, members meet to decide which books will be read the following year. - Book Club 2 (Café Book Club) – Leader: Kathy Seredynska
Meetings have occurred outdoors in Upper Queen’s Park on the first Saturday of each month @ 10 a.m. Last November, meetings then moved from outdoors to Zoom when the weather changed. Post COVID, meetings will hopefully resume in- person at a café.
Books are chosen from a diverse reading selection. Last year a couple examples included a nominated book from Canada Reads, and an international book. - Book Club 3 (The Prize Book Club) – Leader: Bev Symons
This group focuses on books short-listed for Canadian Literary Awards. The Scotiabank Giller Prize in the fall, and Canada Reads in the winter/spring. Meetings occurred over Zoom last year in the evening, but usually the group meets once before each award for discussion and then gets together to enjoy the awards events. - Book Club 4 (Mystery Readers) – Leader: Pat Bayliss
Members meet on the second Thursday of each month @ 7:30 p.m. to discuss the work of a chosen mystery genre author. Members used to take turns hosting in their homes pre-COVID, the leader will advise of location, which may be over Zoom for now. - Bridge at the Queen’s – Leader: Jean Hillen Bridge Club meets at the Queen’s Inn starting in October, at noon for lunch followed by Bridge around 1 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. This is not a beginner’s Bridge Club – there is no teaching element. This year, if the Queen’s Inn is unavailable to the public, then this group may play online for the first several months.
- Bridge – Duplicate (Romeo Court) – Leader: Jane Cook Members will meet on the fourth Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m. This Bridge Club welcomes members and spares who play, or are willing to learn, basic current American Standard rules e.g., 5-card majors, weak twos, Stayman, transfers. *No previous duplicate experience is necessary.
- Cryptic Crosswords – Leader: Louise McColl Group meets WEEKLY on Tuesday mornings at 10:15 a.m. over Zoom. Members work on the weekly Cryptic Crossword Puzzle featured in Saturday’s Globe and Mail on their own until Tuesday, then meet and work out the answers together.
- Excursions–Leader: JaneCook Excursions, has been formed to extend the scope to include a greater variety of destinations, e.g., a farm or a winery; an out-of-town play, or whatever is of greatest interest. *Please note members who sign up for the new group would be required to join a planning group for one outing a year. Each planning group would be responsible for arranging the destination, including lunch, and setting up the carpooling.
- Gourmet Club – Leaders: Mary Fisher & Pat Reavy This group meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. (start times may vary). Each member takes a turn hosting, and the hostess gets to choose the theme. The hostess supplies the main dish and other members build around it with appetizers, salads, desserts, drinks etc. A very tasty and social evening! Nine is about the maximum number this group can take; however, a secondary sister group can easily be organized for additional interested members.
- Indigenous Rights Learning Group – Leaders: Barbara Collier-Blackburn & Pat Reavy Members meet monthly on the last Wednesday at 7 p.m. for about 1.5 – 2 hours Members learn about Indigenous issues through reading, discussion, and other learning activities.
- Knit Group – Leader: Pat Bayliss This group meets on the last Thursday of each month from approximately 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. on a rotating basis at members’ homes. Members bring knitting, crocheting or other needlework creations to work on while sharing tips and socializing.
- Lunch Bunch – Leader: Jane Cook When safe to do so, members will meet on the third Friday of each month at noon to enjoy lunch while socializing with CFUW members at various restaurants in Stratford.
- Purl Group – Leader: Hélène Crabb This group was formed when the Knit Group grew too large. Basically, the same description, but the Purl Group meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
- Quilting Group – Leader: Lois Battle Members meet weekly on Mondays at 2 p.m. in the leader’s backyard as weather permits, or her studio. Finishing times vary but tea or lemonade is usually served at 4 p.m. Members work on personal projects, and sometimes a group quilting project. Due to studio workspace, there is a maximum capacity that this group can comfortably accommodate. However, if someone wishes to lead a secondary Quilting Group, we can help you to get it started.
- Saturday Breakfast Social – Leader: Margareta Skulsky (New) This group is for members to socialize over breakfast on the second Saturday of each month @ 10 a.m. at local Stratford restaurants. A survey will be provided to all members after the first meeting – and restaurants will be chosen based on the group results. Reminders of the name and restaurant location will go out one week in advance and members will need to RSVP 72 hours beforehand for leader to book a group reservation.
- Walking and Hiking – Leader: Wendy McNaughton The group meets at 8:45 a.m. and walks for one hour every second Saturday. Many of the walkers then join the Breakfast group for brunch.

APPEAL FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
CFUW Stratford Scholarship
Dear Members of CFUW-Stratford Club,
I am contacting you on behalf of the CFUW-Stratford Club Scholarship Fund Committee. Our Scholarship Fund is an integral aspect of CFUW’s mission statement to support the education of girls and women. CFUW-Stratford has a long history of providing scholarship awards to Secondary School female students. In 1954, our Club established a $100 bursary for a young woman from Stratford who planned to attend University. That small bursary has grown. The CFUW-Stratford Scholarship Fund currently provides $6000 annually to young women graduating from our local Secondary School programs.
Due to these unprecedented times, the Scholarship Committee is asking for your help in order to fulfill our scholarship obligations for the 2022 Commencements. Covid-19 has prevented us from holding most fundraising events and the format of our Fall Open House, where we normally receive member donations, will be modified. As a result, we are experiencing a cash shortfall and we need to raise a minimum of $3000.
Please consider giving a donation to our Scholarship Fund to help young women who deserve recognition of their hard work and who need financial and moral support at this time. We hope to not have to decrease the value of the scholarships offered at a time when stu- dents have had limits on their income earning abilities.
All donations are appreciated and any gift over $20 will be recognized with a charitable donation tax receipt.
You may donate to our CFUW-Stratford Scholarship Fund with an electronic fund transfer by using the following email: scholarshipfundcfuwstratford@gmail.com
On receipt of your donation, Kate Welsh, (CFUW-Stratford Scholarship Fund Treasurer), will email to confirm receipt of funds and will generate your charitable donation receipt.
Alternately, you may also mail or drop off a cheque to:
Kate Welsh
10 Gregory Cres.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Kindest regards,
CFUW-Stratford Scholarship Fund Committee

7:00 PM
Location: Avondale United Church Narthex
The Annual Meet and Greet included both returning members, interested visitors, and new members who joined. Following a time of socializing and renewing/joining, President Cambria Ravenhill called the meeting to order at 7:40 and began with the indigenous land acknowledgement. She welcomed guests and returning members, and outlined CFUW’s purposes and activities.
Two students from Conestoga College, Meredith Klynstra and Sarah Vollmer were introduced to the Club and presented with the 2018 CFUW Stratford Mature Student Scholarships. Meredith and Sarah were accompanied by two representative from the college, Michelle Atkin, Instructor, and Murray Stinson, Coordinator, Academic Upgrading, Stratford Campus.
Program co-coordinator Pat Reavy discussed the program for the coming year, “Let’s Talk about Convenience; the Pros and Cons of 21st Century Ease and Efficiency”, which will focus on both the benefits and cost of convenience in our present culture, including the impacts of social media, fast fashion, fast food, environmental toxins and democratic engagement. The program speakers include professors from the Universities of Guelph and Waterloo, Sheridan College, the Women’s Healthy Environments Network, the City of Stratford, Green Hair Spa and the Perth District Health Unit
Jane Cook, Interest Groups coordinator, outlined the groups available and looking for new members this year, the potential for new groups, and encouraged members to sign up during the break.
Advocacy Chair, Louise McColl, presented a review of the Advocacy committee’s projects, and raised the idea of twinning through GWI with a club or NFA (National Federation or Association) in another country, possibly focusing on sharing projects on reducing plastic waste, or equal pay. Moved by Pat Reavy that CFUW Stratford proceed with twin with another club or NFA through GWI. Seconded by Lorraine Kuepfer passed unanimously.
Pat Reavy introduced Kathy Vassilakos, the coordinator of the School Travel Plan, City of Stratford. Kathy gave a power point presentation on the School Travel Plan, which launched last year with two schools in Stratford. The Active Ttransportation Advisory Committee, City Staff, the PDHU (Health Unit), the Stratford Police and Cycle Stratford all participated in this project. A School Travel Plan collects data, looks at neighborhood infrastructure and runs education programs like Bike Rodeos, Winter Walks, and Walk and Wheel days. All these combine to promote and facilitate active transportation to and from school. Kathy was thanked by Bev Symons.
Anne Carbert coordinated a draw for a door prize, won by Charlotte Gillett. Cambria reminded members of the Women Candidates’ Gathering on October 11th at 7:00 pm at the Queen’s Inn, and the next meeting on October 23rd, with Dr. Karen Houle as speaker. She also reminded members to remember to donate to the Scholarship fund, particularly in light of the fact that two awards had been given earlier in the evening.
Moved by Louise McColl that the meeting be adjourned.
General Meeting Minutes October 2018
CFUW Stratford General Meeting Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018
1. Jane Cook welcomed members and guests and thanked the Mahjong group for refreshments and for acting as welcomers.
2. Acknowledge First Nations – Jane Cook acknowledged that CFUW Stratford was meeting on the
traditional territory of the Neutral/Attawandaron, Anishnawbe and Haudenosaunee peoples, territory that was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and the Ojibwe and allied nations, to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.
3. Indigenous information moment – Anne Carbert talked about the reason that we give a land acknowledgement at the beginning of our meetings, to recognize that the land has belonged to others, and that it has been, is and will be cared for by various peoples. It acknowledges the history of colonialism, the interests of the indigenous peoples, and current issues such as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
4. Minutes: Pat Reavy moved that the minutes of the September 2018 meeting, as circulated be approved; seconded by Nora Walden, passed.
5. Program: Pat Reavy to introduced Dr. Karen Houle, a professor of philosophy from the University of Guelph, mother of twin daughters, with two grandchildren. Dr. Houle teaches on environmental ethics, does research on urban organic farming, and is an activist.
Speaking on “Waste Not, Want Not” she described being challenged by an Anishnabe elder who said” “Too much talking, do something.” This inspired Dr. Houle to become involved in the clean up of dumpsters full of garbage left by students who have a day or two after exams to leave their residences. A young man spearheaded an initiative to recycle the materials left, including clothes, furniture, food etc. Some food goes to food banks, but partially used items are donated to an organic farmer to compost—-Dr. Houle empties the jars of peanut butter, mayonnaise etc. into pails for this purpose. The process is available on Vimeo, and is entitled “Diverted”. She has concluded that the things that are important are community, the environment, justice, education, health, and women and equality. She focuses her environmental philosophy classes on plastics reduction, consumer choices (value what we have and take care of it) and composting.
Jane Cook thanked Dr. Houle for her inspiring presentation.
6. Plastics Moment –Lorraine Kuepfer and Anna Stratton spoke about alternatives to using plastics, and had put up a display demonstrating the

anyone who hadn’t received one. The motion will be voted on at the Nov meeting.

Feedback after the event was good and we maintained 40% representation of women on the council. The application for twinning with a club or NFA in another country has been submitted to GWI. The advocacy committee, although mainly Anne Carbert, has prepared a letter for Randy Pettapiece, outlining our concerns about the actions of the new Ontario government, and requesting a meeting with him. We are also pushing the Ontario Council of CFUW to challenge the government on issues to do with education, climate change, poverty, and the elimination of violence against women.
